What is laminate flooring?

An affordable and durable alternative to genuine wood, stone, and ceramic tile, laminate floors are the ideal combination of aesthetics and function. This multi-layered product comes with a backing, core, and digitally printed design layer. At the top is yet another layer: a clear, tough aluminum oxide coating that protects the floor from scratches and scuffs, making it virtually impossible to wear down the image.

Get high-end looks with laminate

You can get either a textured, grainy, and realistic wood look with laminate flooring, cut into planks to mimic hardwood boards, or square, groutable pieces to echo stone or ceramic tile. You can have a marble, granite, travertine, terrazzo, or slate stone look floor with this option. Ceramic tile looks are available as colorful geometrics, chevrons, herringbone, or filigrees.

All images are taken with 3D photography. Micro beveling and deep embossing add depth, dimension, and textured features such as wire-brushed, hand scraped, weathered, and distressed. The images follow current trends so that you can get almost anything from the trending gray wood look floors to popular marble bath surfaces.

Can you have laminate flooring in any room?

Yes! Waterproof laminate flooring was recently introduced to the U.S. market, making it a good choice for the kitchen, bath, or wet space. This laminate has a unique construction, so it's waterproof from the top, eliminating concerns about spills absorbing, staining, and causing peeling and rippling. The original highly water-resistant laminate is still very much in demand, so be sure to specify to your retailer which version you want.

The best laminate flooring has the appropriate strength level for your installation, so pay attention to the AC (Abrasion Criteria) Rating, a one-to-five system that determines strength. The higher the number, the more resistant to wear; for example, AC1 is for low to moderate foot traffic, while AC3 or AC4 is for very active and busy families. AC5 (and you’ll sometimes even see AC6) is for heavy commercial use. Laminate thicknesses range from 7-mm to 12-mm, but keep in mind that thicker is always better.
